SBR to be discontinued from 2011

The RYA/RORC Sportsboat Rule (SBR) was introduced in 1996 as a joint venture between the RYA and the RORC. The numbers of individual boats rated each year have fluctuated largely as a result of popular classes using the rule prior to becoming Recognised One Designs with the highest number rated in any one year being c250. Over the last few years, the number of individual boats rated has fallen to just 48 in 2009. So far 2010 shows no increase in usage.

It is with regret therefore that the RYA and the RORC have taken the decision that SBR will be discontinued with effect from 1st January 2011 (1st June 2011 in Southern hemisphere countries).

IRC Certificate processing times

[Extract from Poolside issue 10/05 1 June 2010]

Common confusions 11: Certificate processing times - help us to help you!

Not a technical common confusion as we normally include, but nevertheless an issue which causes some discussion!

The Rating Office recognises that it is here as a service to yacht owners, and others involved in yacht racing, and we pride ourselves on getting boats on to the start-line of their race or event with a correct, valid rating certificate. Each year, we process around 6500 certificates for 4600 boats in 25 countries, so as you can imagine things get a little hectic at peak times!

Sailmakers - in-house certification for Endorsement

As you probably know, ISAF, the International Sailing Federation have developed In-House Certification (IHC) to permit equipment manufacturers to self certify their own products. This offers the advantages to manufacturers of providing a complete service to their customers in a manner accepted by certification authorities.

The RORC Rating Office, acting as the IRC Rule Authority for IRC in GBR, have now decided that with effect from 1st January 2011, sailmakers submitting sail data for an IRC Endorsed certificate for British owned boats will be required to be IHC certified.

For full details, please download the PDF below:
