Designers

IRC’s Design Trial service is available for designs still on the drawing board, and applications may be sent direct from the designer to the Rating Office (or YCF for designers in their ‘catchment’ area). As soon as the boat is launched it is no longer a design trial and must apply for a valid certificate.

Design trial fees & forms

Initial trial (01)
Fee as calculated on the design trial form (ex VAT. VAT applies to UK design offices)
Please request an application form from the Rating Office.

When sending the application please attach the following design drawings, which will be treated in strict confidence:

  • Profile including appendages
  • Sail plan
  • Accommodation GA

A note regarding hull materials. As noted on the application, ‘hull’ includes the hull shell, deck and structure. If there is a mix of materials, (e.g. honeycomb in the deck but not in the hull shell; ply hull & structure, with foam sandwich deck) you must select ‘Other or Various’ in the hull materials and supply full details and % of materials in different areas, either in the spaces provided on the form for additional notes, or in an email accompanying the application.

For foiling or foil assisted designs we will require completion of the IRC Appendix F data form, this is available on request.

Subsequent trials (02-06)
Fee as calculated on the trial form (ex VAT. VAT applies to UK design offices)

Please request the current Trial form from the Rating Office (only give data that differs from trial 01) and attach drawings if any changes are being made to hull, appendages, rig configuration or interior. If you have any questions about running Design Trials please contact us.

RORC Rating Office policy on charges

  1. For designs (including custom boats) that are still on the drawing board, i.e. not built or in-build, and none of the design on the water, we will charge the “design trial” fee (currently the same as the new application fee). As soon as a boat to that design is built then that boat must make a full application.
  2. For existing boats or designs i.e. there are boats to the design built, where a trial is required by an owner/agent/designer for the design rather than for a specific boat, the full application fee will apply. Specific boats must make a full normal application.

The standard IRC Trial policy applies.

If you would like advice for your specific circumstances, please contact the RORC Rating Office.
