Jenny Howells

Technical Manager

Jenny joined the Rating Office in January 1985 as an office junior and cut her technical teeth on the Channel Handicap System, that later became IRC.

She now heads up the Technical Team and is responsible for smooth IRC administration on a day-to-day basis as well as being involved in technical decisions; she attempts to keep Jason and our Technical Consultants under control by considering the practical consequences of their theoretical ideas. Jenny maintains the Rating Office and IRC websites and looks after the Rating Office social networking pages.

Jenny handles the IRC ratings for Australia, the USA, New Zealand, Japan, SE Asia and the Caribbean; plus the larger worldwide boats, Maxis and IOR Ton boats. Jenny is a member of the IRC Technical Committee and RORC Technical Committee, was Chair of the RYA Technical Committee 2020-2023, and a member of the Admiral’s Cup 2025 Technical Committee.

In her spare time Jenny has fun in classic motorsport, speed hill climbing and sprinting in her 1968 Hillman Imp at venues between Cornwall and Scotland. In 2015 she graduated with 1st class honours from the Open University in a BSc in Criminology & Psychological Studies after 6 years of part-time study.
