GBR IRC Committee highlights strong fleets and fresh opportunities

The 2026 meeting of the GBR IRC Committee, held in Lymington, highlighted a positive outlook for IRC racing in the UK with strong championship participation, growing engagement at club level and continued efforts to make yacht racing more accessible and welcoming.

The committee heard that IRC certificate numbers remain broadly stable, with encouraging interest from returning owners and sailors progressing from the RYA’s YTC scheme. Major championships and key events continued to attract healthy fleets, while new online processes are helping streamline administration for both owners and the RORC Rating Office.

A recurring theme throughout the meeting was participation. Reports from around the country demonstrated that clubs are seeing growth where they provide clear pathways into racing, active fleet management and a strong social environment alongside competition. Initiatives aimed at younger sailors, women and newcomers were highlighted as particularly successful, with members sharing examples of fleets becoming increasingly self-sustaining as participation grows.

The committee reviewed two of the successful championship events in 2026: the GBR IRC National Championship at Dartmouth and the IRC European Championship at Poole. Members approved the 2027 championship programme and discussed opportunities to further strengthen race management guidance, race officer education and support for event organisers.

Looking further ahead, discussions covered emerging technology, including the use of AI and data analysis to better understand racecourse design and fleet performance. Members also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining the accessibility and simplicity that have long been central to IRC.

The meeting concluded with thanks to retiring Chair Stephen Tudor, recognising his contribution to IRC and yacht racing over more than a decade of committee service.
