Challenging Conditions for the 2026 GBR IRC National Championship at Dartmouth

The 2026 GBR IRC National Championship was held as part of the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta Sailing Week during the final week of August. Hosted in the waters of Start Bay, the championship brought together a strong fleet of IRC competitors for four days of varied racing, although the weather ultimately presented competitors and race organisers with a significant challenge.

Dartmouth remains one of the UK’s great family regattas, and this year saw 61 boats racing under IRC, with 39 holding Endorsed IRC certificates and therefore eligible for the GBR IRC National Championship.

The IRC fleet was divided into five classes spread across three race areas. The championship was scheduled as a ten-race series featuring a mix of windward-leeward, triangle-sausage and bay races, providing a variety of course formats as recommended for IRC racing to ensure that no single yacht type or design style dominates. Start Bay’s expansive racing area allowed the regatta to accommodate the rating band splits while enabling efficient race management.

After a summer dominated by heatwaves and light winds, conditions changed dramatically as strong south-westerly winds arrived towards the end of the week.

Racing began on Thursday, with three races completed. As the series progressed, competitors faced an increasing sea state as tidal changes interacted with the strengthening breeze. Friday morning delivered two further races, but conditions continued to build and racing was abandoned for the day following two dismastings and a broken boom.

With safety concerns extending beyond competitors to race management volunteers and committee boat crews, organisers closely monitored a range of forecasts before making the difficult decision to cancel Saturday’s racing programme, including the planned Bay Race.

Fortunately, Sunday brought more manageable conditions and two additional races were completed, resulting in a seven-race championship series. Competitors then gathered at the Royal Dart Yacht Club on Sunday evening for the prize-giving ceremony, with championship prizes generously provided by North Sails.

The overall 2026 GBR IRC National Champion title went to Elaine Again (Claire and Ed Mockridge), winners of IRC 3. Leon (David Franks), winner of IRC 1, and Standfast (Simon Patterson), winner of IRC 0, completed the Championship podium.

The event used remotely controlled robotic marks, which gave race officers greater flexibility when adjusting courses to suit changing wind conditions. They also supported the regatta’s environmental objectives by eliminating the need for anchors and reducing disturbance to the seabed. Dartmouth has been awarded Platinum Clean Regattas certification by Sailors for the Seas for the past two years, reflecting its commitment to sustainable event management.

The regatta is also committed to supporting sailors aged 18-29 as the future of our sport. Recent initiatives with sponsor partners have offered educational opportunities in sail technology as well as financial incentives to help youth-crewed yachts invest in equipment and further their racing programmes.
